The Short History of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Engines of First Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993-1998).

In 1992 is launched the first generation of the model year 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee also known as ZJ. It’s offered with a 2.5L diesel engine with 114 hp and the max torque is 221 lb. ft / 300 Nm between 1995 - 1998. This engine version is offered on markets outside of the US. The first gasoline engine is a 4.0L AMC in-line 6-cylinder that produces 190 hp and 225 lb. ft / 305 Nm of torque, offered between 1993-1995. From 1996 till the end of production in ’98, there was an upgrade of that engine called 4.0L AMC Power Tech in-line 6-cylinder. Surprisingly,  the renewed engine comes with downforce power which means 185 hp max power and 220 lb. ft / 298 Nm max torque. The 5.2 L V8 Magnum engine goes with 225 hp and 300 lb. ft / 407 Nm in production from 1993 to 1998. From 1998 there is a 5.9 L V8 Magnum engine with an increased power of 245 hp and 345 lb. ft / 468 Nm for Limited equipment level.



Transmissions for the First Generation 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ)

The 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee goes with the 4-speed Aisin AW-4 automatic transmission for the 4.0L engine. Between 1993 and 1995 another Aisin gearbox is offered – the 5-speed manual AX15 also for the 4.0L engine. The third gearbox available for the 4.0L engine is 4-speed automatic 42RE offered from 1993 to 1998.

From 1993 to 1995 the first-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered with a 4-speed automatic 46RH transmission for the 5.2L engine. From 1996 to 1998 that engine has a new transmission also 4-speed automatic but it’s the 44RE. The 4-speed automatic gearbox 46RE is offered in the end of the production of the ZJ Jeep Grand Cherokee for the 5.9L V8 engine.



The sales of the first gen Jeep Grand Cherokee are:

1993 | 250,143 units sold;

1994 | 257,557 units sold;

1995 | 290,132 units sold;

1996 | 299,726 units sold;

1997 | 277,789 units sold;

1998 | 271,841 units sold;

A total of 1,647,188 units are sold for the whole production of the first-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.



The Engines of the Second Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) (1999 – 2004)

In production from June 16, 1998, till 2004 the second-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee offers these gasoline engines:

1999 – 2004 the 4.0 L PowerTech in-line 6 with 195 hp and 230 lb.ft / 312 Nm.

1999 – 2004 the 4.7 L PowerTech V8 with 235 hp and 295 lb.ft / 400 Nm.

2002 – 2004 the 4.7 L PowerTech V8 with 254 hp and 330 lb.ft / 447 Nm.



The Second-Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Has Two Diesel Engines:

1999 – 2001 the 3.1 L diesel in-line 5-cylinder engine with 138 hp and 283 lb.ft / 384 Nm. It’s the 531 OHV diesel engine by Italian manufacture VM Motori S.p.A.

2002 – 2004 the 2.7 L diesel in-line 5-cylinder engine with 161 hp and 295 / 400 Nm. It’s the OM612 Mercedes-Benz diesel engine.

The diesel engine for the second-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is for Europe, South Africa, and some South American markets.

The Second-Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmissions

However, the second-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee has two 4-speed automatic transmissions the 42RE and the 45RFE, and also the 5-speed automatic 545RFE.

The third-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee offers six gasoline engines and a diesel version available in Europe and North America. Let’s get started with the gasoline ones:

2005 2010 the 3.7 L V6 engine with a power of 215 hp and 235 lb. ft / 319 Nm of torque;

2005 2007 the 4.7 L V8 engine with a power of 230 hp and 295 lb. ft / 400 Nm of torque;

2008 2009 the 4.7 L V8 engine with a power of 305 hp and 334 lb. ft / 453 Nm of torque;

2005 2008 the 5.7 L Hemi V8 engine with a power of 325 hp and 369 lb. ft / 500 Nm of torque;

2009 2010 the 5.7 L Hemi V8 engine with a power of 357 hp and 389 lb. ft / 527 Nm of torque;

2006 – 2010 the 6.1 L Hemi V8 engine with a power of 420 hp and 420 lb. ft / 569 Nm of torque for the SRT8 version of the third generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The 3.0L Mercedes-Benz OM642 V6 diesel engine is available for the third-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee. That engine produces max power of 215 hp and the max torque is 376 lb.ft / 510 Nm. The diesel version of the WK Jeep Grand Cherokee is sold in Europe from 2005 to 2010 and also in North America between 2007 and 2009.

There are two gearboxes the 5-speed 545RFE automatic and the 5-speed W5A580 automatic.



The Engines of the Fourth-Generation Jeep GrandCherokee (WK2) (2011 – 2021)

In the 4th gen Jeep Grand Cherokee, there are 4 gasoline engines and 4 diesel engines. The gasoline engine starts with:

2011 – Present; the 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine that produces max power of 290 hp and 260 lb. ft / 353 Nm of torque.  

2011 – Present; the 5.7 L Hemi V8 engine with a max power of 360 hp and 390 lb. ft / 529 Nm of torque;

2012 – Present; the 6.4 L Hemi V8 engine produces max power of 475 hp and the max torque is 470 lb. ft / 637 Nm. This engine is available for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and also for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT version.

2018 – Present; the 6.2 L supercharged Hemi V8 engine with the max power of 707 hp and 645 lb. ft / 875 Nm of torque. This is the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk version.

There are 4 diesel engines for the fourth-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee and here is the list:

2014 – 2019 the 3.0 L EcoDiesel V6 engine produces 240 hp and the max torque is 420 lb. ft / 569 Nm

2011 – Present; the 3.0 L CRD V6 diesel engine with a max power of 188 hp and max torque 320 lb. ft/ 434 Nm. This engine goes with a 5=speed automatic gearbox from 2011 to 2013 in Europe. From 2013 the transmission is replaced with an 8-speed also automatic, European specification.

2011 – 2013 the 3.0 L CRD V6 diesel engine with a max power of 237 hp and max torque 420 lb. ft / 569 Nm. The transmission is 5-speed automatic, European specification.

2013 – Present; the 3.0 L CRD V6 diesel engine with 247 hp and 420 lb. ft / 569 Nm of torque. It’s the same engine and power specification but it’s matted to the 8-speed automatic transmission, European spec.

The 2011-2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission list is:

2011–2013  the W5A580 5-speed automatic transmission for the 3.0, 3.6 L and from 2012 to 2013 it’s also matted to the 6.4 L engine.

In 2011 the 545RFE 5-speed automatic gearbox is fitted to the 5.7 L. From 2012 to 2013 for the same engine is used the 65RFE 6-speed automatic transmission.

2014–2017 the 845RE 8-speed automatic is used for the 3.6 L engine. Since 2018 the 850RE 8-speed automatic gearbox has been used for a 3.6 L engine.

2014– the 8HP70 8-speed automatic transmission works for the 3.0, 5.7, 6.4 L engines.

2018– the 8HP95 8-speed automatic gearbox works for the 6.2 L engine.

The fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee was revealed on January 7, 2021. This generation goes with the 3.6 L Pentastar V6 and the 5.7L Hemi V8 gasoline engines. The gasoline Plug-in hybrid version uses the 2.0L Hurricane in-line 4-cylinder turbo engine with an electric motor. Both versions are with an 8-speed Toruqueflite 850RE automatic transmission.
