The New BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4: All-Wheel Drive & Transmission
The
new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 use BMW’s xDrive system and its
intelligent and dynamic distribution. The torque is distributed between rear
and front axle continuously and fully variable within milliseconds for maximum
traction and control. The torque distribution control is interconnected with
the Dynamic Stability Control and the engine management system. The programing
of the torque distribution is performance-oriented which increases driving
agility and dynamics, especially under lateral acceleration as keeping balanced
and neutral handling.
The
torque distribution system of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 continuously
monitors a wide range of sensor as: steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw
angle and speed. This is made in order the torque to be distributed for maximum safety in challenging conditions or when there are sudden changes on
the road surface friction. The Dynamic Stability Control has a DTC Mode which
offers more rear wheel drive torque distribution and allows for more slip when
driving at the limit.
Both
the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 come with an electronically
controlled active rear limited slip differential. Thus the traction in dynamic driving
is improved by ensuring that slip-induced losses are minimized and the torque
is distributed effectively to the wheel with the most grip at any time. It also enhances driving dynamics, even in combination with all-wheel
drive, and operated in conjunction with the ALPINA’s rear-wheel based torque
distribution.
The
new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 have the latest generation 8-speed
Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC. It’s specifically
refined and adapted to the torque and performance of the straight 6-cylinder
diesel engine. The gearbox is made in collaboration with ZF and offers
exceptional shift comfort. The combination of eight gears and high engine
torque at ease makes for relaxing, luxurious cruising at low rpm even when
travelling at speed.
The
BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 in Sport Mode both models are optimized
for improved driving performance and gear changes. They also have a Launch
Control function. The SWITCH-TRONIC buttons on the back of the
steering-wheel give you the option for manual gear shifting and maximum dynamic
performance with your pace. The shifting time is close to a tenth of a second
and in Sport Mode you can force upshifts in the engine speed limit range. The
central components of the transmission such as the torque converter and
planetary wheels are designed to cope with the high torque.
