The
new BMW Z4 Roadster has very aggressive and sporty appearance as it should be
for such a car. The new model is 3.3 inches longer, 2.9 inches wide and 0.5
inches taller. In same time the wheel-base has been shortened by 1.0 inch. The
result is wider track +3.86 inches front and +2.45 inches in rear and its weight
distribution is balanced 50:50.
The BMW Z4 will have two
engines for the U.S. market: the BMW Z4 sDrive30i and the BMW Z4 M40i.
The
BMW Z4 sDrive30i has a new 2.0L four cylinder TwinPower Turbocharged engine
with an increase of 15 hp and 35 lb-ft. torque in comparison with the old BMW
Z4. The total power of the BMW Z4 sDrive30i is 255 hp in a range from 5,000 to
6,500 rpm, the maximum torque is 295 lb-ft. from 1,550 up to 4,400 rpm. The new
BMW engine also has a High Precision Injection system which maximum pressure
has been increased to 350 bar. The summary is 0-60 mph for 5.2 seconds.

The
BMW Z4 M40i will be the most powerful version. The all-new 2020 BMW Z4 M40i
Roadster has 3.0 L six-cylinder in-line engine. Here the power is increased
with 47 hp to maximum power of 382 hp between 5,000 and 6,500 rpm. The
maximum torque is 369 lb-ft. from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. The BMW Z4 M40i engine
also has High Precision Injection system working on maximum pressure of 350
bar. The power of the new Z4 M40i is delivered with quicker TwinScroll
turbocharger. The 6-cylinder engine has a standout feature which includes a
water-cooled exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.

The
new BMW Z4 Roadster has as standard 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission for
both models sDrive30i and M40i. The shift paddles are available on the steering
wheel. The transmission has shorter ratio gears which improves the
acceleration. The gearbox has Launch Control which enables you to accelerate
hard from a standing start with maximum traction. The BMW Z4 M40i 8-speed
Steptronic Sport transmission is configured with M-specific shift characteristics
to compliment the straight-six engine’s power.
The
BMW Z4 Roadster chassis is designed to give the maximum possible agility and
handling dynamics. It has a new designed double-joint spring strut suspension
at the front. For the very first time a BMW Roadster has a five-link rear
suspension. The front suspension sub frame and control arm mounting points are
extremely rigid, which lends to precise cornering characteristics as well as
having a beneficial effect on the drivetrain’s acoustics. Developing such a
chassis the engineers wanted to create a perfect combination between sports car
handling and ride comfort.

The
BMW Z4 Roadster has sport steering with variable power assist and ratio. The
power steering system is designed to promote not just straight-line stability
and also to provide precise feedback during cornering and effortless low-speed maneuvering.
The
BMW Z4 Roadster is equipped with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system,
including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),
Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Brake
Control (DBC).

The BMW Z4 M40i - interior. |
The
BMW Z4 M40i M Performance model has Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes
and M Sport differential as standard. These features are also available for the
BMW Z4 sDrive30i as optional equipment. The Adaptive M Sport suspension includes
electronically controlled dampers featuring a 10 mm lower ride height. The M
Sport rear differential is electronically controlled which has to give to the
Z4 sharper sporting handling. The all new BMW Z4 also has an electric motor
which generates a locking effect in the differential to equalize torque
distribution between the inside and outside rear wheels when cornering, making
it possible to power out of bends with greater momentum. The active differential
lock also works effectively as reducing both understeer and oversteer.
