The
new G20 Sedan or Limousine a.k.a the BMW 3 Series Sedan is on the final stage
before the production line. The tests are now at the legendary Nordschleife at
Nürburgring. The “Green Hell” is the place where all BMWs have endurance test
for drive and suspension technology.
The
new BMW 3-Series Sedan has compressive renewal of the wheel suspension, steering,
damping/suspension and brakes. Thus the developers have a broad range of opportunities
to optimize the ride comfort and dynamic performance.

The
center of gravity is 10 mm lower than the last model of the BMW 3 Series. The
axle load distribution is balanced on 50:50 and the total weight lowered with
55 kg. At the same time, the body structure and suspension are improved.

About
the engine range, there is a thoroughly revised 4-cylinder petrol engine which
is the most powerful one fitted in a BMW series production model. Its fuel consumption
is 5% lower than its predecessor engine. A further developed 8-speed Steptronic
transmission will be available for the new BMW 3 Series. And last but not
least, a particulate filter optimizes the emissions and thus the engine cover
the Euro6d-TEMP exhaust standard.
The
improvements are also made and for front and rear axles of the new BMW 3 Series
Sedan in order to a specific orientation of the axle kinematics and “elastokinematics”
towards supreme sporty drive properties. The new 3 Series has first ever
lift-related dampers in the whole BMW model range. It’s a key feature in terms
of suspension development for the new 3er. This technology will absorb the vibrations
that occur on the bumpy roads and during the dynamic cornering and they have to
be neutralized especially gently and precisely. Thus the new BMW 3 Series Sedan
will has a unique balance between sport flair and ride comfort and it’s pointed
as a defining characteristic of the new model.

The
lift-related dampers are standard feature in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan.
Optionally, you could choose a specific set-up with M sports suspension which
additionally lowering the new 3 Series Sedan with 10 mm. There are also 18-inch
light alloy wheels and mixed tires. Thus the BMW provides a boost to driving
dynamics. The tests showed that the increased damping forces can be felt on the
Nordschleife in particular: in the M sports suspension these are some 20 per
cent higher than in the standard suspension:
“This means the difference
from the standard suspension is much more perceptible than before," says
Peter Langen, Head
of Driving Dynamics. "We've also made the M sports suspension much sportier,
with more rigid bearings and stabilisers, harder springs and additional body
struts."

The
diversity of the track layout of the Nürburgring Nordschleife is a perfect
place for the settings between the new damping technology and the other
suspension components:
"We're using the
lift-related dampers as an active set-up element so as to create supreme
driving properties in all conditions," explains Peter Langen. "With
short spring travel, a sensitive damping response ensures comfortable vibration
compensation. When the car passes over large bumps, the body movements are
controlled by increased damping forces."

The
new M sports suspension is offered solely in combination with the Variable
Spots Steering in addition to the speed-related steering assistance
Servotronic. The Variable Sports Steering has also been specially reconfigured
for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan which has to respond much greater precision to
slight steering movements, without seeming nervous in central position. This
effect of the steering system can be felt on long bend as well as when changing
direction several times in rapid succession. A linear build-up of steering
forces and optimized feedback increase precision when cornering in dynamic
style.
The
M sport differential demonstrated its qualities on both the Nordschleife and
the Grand Prix circuit. It has electronically controlled locking function in
the rear axle differential of the new BMW 3 Series and it’s linked to the
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). It ensures needs-oriented limitation of
rotation speed compensation between the rear wheel on the inside and on the
outside of the bend. Thus it’s possible to pre-emptively influence both under-
and oversteering between the rear wheels. This is made to prevent slip on a
wheel with reduced surface grip while ensuring the engine power to be used unrestrictedly
in order to generate sporty driving pleasure.
"Unlike conventional
mechanical locks, the regulated M sports differential can optimise so much more
than just traction," says Peter Langen. "In addition to cornering
dynamics, there is a particularly tangible increase in drive stability in the
event of load changes, for example. This allows the new BMW 3 Series Sedan to
be driven remarkably confidently and effortlessly even when travelling in
dynamic style."

The
new BMW 3 Series Sedan active differential lock provides much higher level of
transverse acceleration as well as perceptible boost in dynamic performance during
acceleration out of bends. It also supports optimized stability, precision and
cornering predictability.
