The New BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 With a New Engine?

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 are now available for order. Both models have been upgraded with the foremost goal more power, torque, dynamic handling and comfort.

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 have the new BMW 3.0 L straight-six engine with quad-turbocharging and common-rail high-pressure direct injection. The power of the engine is 388 hp (285 kW) and the peak power is available in wide range from 4000 to 5000 rpm. The maximum torque is 770 NM (568 lb-ft).

Both BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 accelerate from 0-100 km/h for 4.6 seconds and the maximum speed is respectively 267 km/h and 268 km/h and now these models are fastest-in-segment.

The two-stage turbocharging system with four turbocharges is responsible for the maximum performance of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4.  The turbocharging system has two low-pressure stages operating in parallel and two small high-pressure stages with variable geometry which also operate in parallel. Thus the power delivery is created to be smooth, effortless and unusually dynamic over the entire rpm range for a diesel engine.

In order to ensure the cooling of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 the engineers put a high-performance cooling package, designed for maximum effectiveness. Large volume coolers and optimized coolant hosing allow high throughput rates and an indirect intercooler set-up keeps air intake distance short. A primary air-water cooler located in front of the engine supplies a large volume water-air intercooler. Additionally three external coolers and a transmission oil cooler guarantee thermodynamic stability even under highest loads.

In order to keep the low consumption and emissions the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 have the latest exhaust gas treatment technology including particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, a SCR catalytic converter with aqueous urea solution injection (AdBlue®) which reduces emissions to minimum. The capacity of the AdBlude tank is 20 liter and has to be enough for 10 000 kilometers (6213.7 miles).

Both XD3 and XD4 are tested according to the new and more realistic Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and the fuel consumption is 6.9l/100 km (34.09 U.S. MPG) and 182g/km CO2 emissions.
