2015 Grand Auto Show: Audi A7 Sportback
The
Ingolstadt automobile company Audi presents the A7 Sportback model in 2010.
Four years later the newest model of the Audi A7 Sportback was presented. The
Audi A7 range includes the Audi S7 Sportback and Audi RS7 Sportback.

The
Audi A7 Sportback is my favorite model and may be both with the SUV Q7. The
Audi A7 has the same DNA with its cousins from A to Q but looks different. The
whole structure of the A7 has very sporty lines as a coupe and it’s very
elegant like limousine. About choose of the engine and the S7 or RS7 – it depends. There are a lot of engines for the Audi A7
Sportback.
2.0 TFSI
S tronic (185 kW)
The
smallest A7 engine is 2.0 TFSI S tronic and uses petrol fuel. It’s an inline
4-cylinder spark-ignition engine with gasoline direct injection; exhaust
turbocharged and has Audi valve lift system. The exact displacement is 1984 cc
(121.07 cu in) the power is 252 hp @ 5000–6000 rpm; the max torque is 370 Nm
(272.9 lb-ft) @ 1600-4500 rpm.

4-cylinder TFSI engine

The
Audi A7 Sportback with its smallest engine has front-wheel drive. The A7
Sportback has hydraulically operated wet dual clutch axially arranged,
dual-mass flywheel with centrifugal pendulum. The transmission is 7-speed.
3.0 TFSI quattro S tronic (245 kW)
The
biggest petrol engine for the Audi A7 Sportback is 3.0 TFSI engine. It has V6
spark-ignition engine, the cylinders are placed on 90 degree. This engine works
with combined demand-controlled gasoline direct injection and manifold injection.
The 3.0 TFSI engine has double overhead camshafts (DOHC), mechanical charger
module, which could be deactivated. It also has two intercoolers, two charge
movement flaps.
The
power of the Audi A7 Sportback with this engine is 333 hp @ 5500-6500 rpm. The
max torque is 440 Nm (324.5 lt-ft.) @ 2900-5300 rpm. The exact displacement is
2995 cc (182.77 cu in).

The
exhaust emission control has two close-coupled ceramic main catalytic converters
each with a pre- and post-catalyst oxygen sensor and secondary air system.
The
drive type of the A7 Sportback with 3.0 TFSI is quattro – permanent all-wheel
drive with self-locking center differential. The clutch has two electro-hydraulically
controlled multi-plate clutches in an oil bath. The gearbox is 7-speed S tronic
and it has direct-shift transmission with electro-hydraulic control.

3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro S tronic (160kW)
Here
are and the diesel engines which are available for the Audi A7 Sportback. The
first diesel engine is “3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro S tronic”. Honestly, from
Audi gives a little bit complicated names for the engines.
However,
this 3.0 TDI engine has 6-cylinders in V-shape placed on 90 degree angle. The
mixture preparation includes common rail injection system which has piezo injectors.
The pressure of the injected fuel is maximum 2000 bar. Back to the mixture
which also has direct injection with eight-hole nozzles, VTG turbocharger with
intercooler, swirl and tangential intake ports and central swirl flap.
As
reading this the conclusion of this engine is, once it’s a very complicated if
we think about maintains. Otherwise, it’s interesting from engineering point of
view.
The
power which 3.0 TDI engine of the Audi A7 Sportback produces is 218 hp @
3250-4750 rpm. The torque is 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) @ 1250-3000 rpm. The exact
displacement is 2967 cc (181.06 cu in).
The
A7 Sportback’ drive type is quattro – permanent all-wheel drive with
self-locking central differential. The gearbox is 7-speed S tronic with direct-shift
transmission with electro-hydraulic control. The 2015 Audi A7 Sportback has two
electro-hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutches in oil bath.
3.0 TDI ultra S tronic (160 kW)

This
is the same 3.0 TDI engine for the Audi A7 Sportback as the previous one. The
differences are the maximum power range 218 hp @ 4000-4750 rpm; the torque
range is 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) @ 1250-3750 rpm. Here the clutch is also different.
It’s wet double clutch in axial alignment and has dual-mass flywheel with centrifugal
pendulum-type absorber. It’s hydraulically actuated. The transmission is the same
but it has front-wheel drive type.
3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro S tronic (160 kW)
As
I said from Audi gives almost similar names for the A7 Sportback engines. It confuses
me a little bit. This engine has just two differences from the “3.0 TDI clean
diesel quattro S tronic” the range of the power: 218 hp @ 3250-5000 rpm. Here
the power range is little bit wider.
3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro S tronic (200 kW)
Let’s
talk about the powerful engine. This is 2967 cc (181.06 cu in) V6 engine with
90 degree V angle. The power which it produces is 272 hp @ 3500-4250 rpm. The
torque is 580 Nm (427.8 lb-ft) 1250-3250 rpm. The mixture preparation is the
same to the previous engines.

3.0 TDI
competition quattro tiptronic (240 kW)
The
dessert is last. The Audi A7 Sportback has a 3.0 TDI engine which is the most
powerful one. It produces 326 hp @ 4000-45000 rpm. The maximum torque is 650 Nm
(479.4 lb-ft) @ 1400-2800 rpm. The displacement is also 2967 cc (181.06 cu in)
This
engine is different because it has regulated 2-stage turbocharger with
intercooler; swirl and tangential intake ports, central swirl flap.

The
Audi A7 Sportback with this 3.0 TDI engine is offered with all-wheel drive
type. The transmission is 8-speed tiptronic with DSP and sport program. The
gearbox is connected to the engine with hydraulic torque converter with lock-up
clutch.

Probably
you will wonder what is DSP? It is Dynamic Shift Program which independently selects
the optimum driving range. With this system the transmission can automatically recognize
the Audi A7 Sportback driving characteristics and to adapt its shifts to the prevailing
conditions. The transmissions with DPS-control are also very easy to maintain
because they don’t need transmission oil changes. This means a cost less.
If
somebody wants more powerful Audi A7 Sportback it will be better to check out
for S7 or RS7 Sportback.
