Grand Auto Show: The BMW 535d xDrive and Technologies



For the very first time the BMW 5-serises was introduced in 1972. There have been made sixth generations of this premium model for now. The sixth generation of BMW 5-series was introduced in 2011. At the 2015 Grand Auto Show was shown BMW 535 xDrive. So, let’s talk about its engine and some of the technologies which are available in the family of the BMW 5-series.

Still I’m not drive any model of BMW 5 series but we could see what the BMW 535 xDrive offers. The engine is straight 6-cylnder with volume 2993 cc and uses diesel fuel. There are BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with variable geometry and high-pressure multi-stage turbocharging. The Common Rail direct injection works with piezo injectors, the maximal injection pressure is 2000 bar.  The power which this engine reached is 313 hp @ 4400 rpm, the max torque is 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) in range 1500-2500 rpm. It sounds good and the fuel consumption is: urban 6.8l/100 km (34.59 US mpg); extra-urban 4.9l/100 km (48 US mpg); combined 5.6l/100 km (42 US mpg). These are the official fuel parameters with standard tires 225/55 R17.

BMW 535d xDrive is mated to 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic function. This BMW with this engine accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) for 5.1 seconds. It’s not bad time for business and premium class sedan. The top speed is 250 km/h (155 mph).

The suspension of the BMW 5-series is made by aluminum. For the font axel there are double-wishbones and integral rear axle. The Driving Experience Control comes as standard for the sixth generation of the BMW business class model.  This system gives you to make personal adjustments of the 5-series’s suspension. The control button is placed in on the middle console. Using Driving Experience Control you can select modes which responses of the accelerator, the steering, the shift characteristics of the automatic transmission and electronically controlled dampers.

There is an optional system which controls the dampers in BMW 5-series called Dynamic Damper Control. It electronically adapts the dampers to the road condition and your driving style. Another system which stabilizes the 5-series is Adaptive Drive. It electronically controls anti-roll bars in order to stabilize your 5-series through the quickly taken corners and in sudden changes of the direction. As additional equipment you can order and M-Sport lowered suspension.

The Integral Active Steering adjusts the steering angle for the front and rear wheels. This system makes the car more agile in dynamic driving as changing the lanes and in the same time optimizes maneuverability through tight bends and in city traffic.

The BMW 5-series’s instrument cluster which is a 10.25-inch TFT display has different color schemes. For example, if you are select the COMFORT mode the scheme of the display has classical view. In ECO PRO mode the rpm meter morphs into an Efficient Dynamics display and this indicates how efficiently you drive. The SPORT mode shows digitally the speed of the car in the form of a large central figure and the current engaged gear is displayed in the center of the rpm meter.

The ECO PRO mode can be activated via standard Driving Control switch. The ECO PRO burn as little fuel as possible because this system controls the engine management, acceleration responses and the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox. It’s interesting what will be the fuel consumption in urban drive with activated ECO PRO mode. If somebody has such information, feel free to share with us.

If you order the optional Navigation system Professional it can help you to save fuel. This is possible with ECO PRO Route function. There is another innovative system in the family of the BMW 5-series called Proactive Driving Assistant. This system can guide you when is the perfect moment to take your foot of the accelerator when you approaching corners and speed-restricted areas. It’s also in order to keeps low fuel consumption.

Your BMW 5 series can be equipped with the new Driving Assistant option which combines Lane Departure Warning (works at least 70 km/h (43 mph)) and Collision Warning with braking function (works at least 15 km/h (9 mph)). It detects if you are going to departure the lane and it will warm you with audible and visual alerts.

The Driving Assistant Plus is a system which upgrades the Driving Assistant and works together with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go. This system in your 5-series can help you in slow-moving traffic and in traffic jams. The Traffic Jam Assistant function can works from 40 km/h (25 mph). This function can control the distance with the car in front your BMW 535d xDrive. In order your BMW 5-series to be in the middle of the lane, the Traffic Jam Assistant uses steering assistance.

The BMW 5-series has thermal imaging camera which is mounted to the front of the vehicle. Using this thermal camera your Bimmer can show you people, animals and everything else which or who radiates heat. This technology is called BMW Night Vision and will help you as warn if there is potential collision with your car. The alert is visual with a symbol on the instrumental cluster. If you order a head-up display the alert will also displayed on it. Moreover, BMW Night Vision system has and audible signal.

The BMW 5-series is a car which has representative function in the business world. Many people use this BMW’s model as a car for work. If you have chance to use BMW 5-series but you have some problems with the parking maneuvers you don’t have need worry about it. The BMW 5 has fully automatic BMW Parking Assistant. This system was available and in the previous model but now it’s upgraded. The BMW Parking Assistant can park your car fully automatically using accelerator and brake pedals.

The BMW 5-series has sixth generation and probably the seventh is on the way. This model has a lot of systems and technologies. The variety of the engines is not small although I write only about the 535d xDrive model. I would like to make video review about BMW 5-series where to show more about the functions about I wrote in this article and other which doesn’t make me such impression for now.
