Peugeot Traveller Attacks The Premium Vehicle Class

Probably the Peugeot is not the leader but it’s one of the leaders in commercial vehicles in the world. This is valid and for the Multi Passengers Vehicles (MPV) which used the commercial vehicle platform.

For me is very strange why Peugeot don’t produce a car which is close to the premium segment models as like Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and etc. A few years ago Peugeot was made the 607 model which for me is more close to the top premium vehicles as BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class but the French body was pleased in the E-Class model and company.

Anyway, I was surprised when I understand that Peugeot presents the Traveller. The surprise is that the Traveller is in VIP Shuttle segment.

Let’s make a comparison with the Peugeot Traveller and some of the other representative cars which are occupied the business segment. So, Peugeot Traveller has three variants about its size called Compact, Standard and Long. As we remember, the top vehicles as Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class have standard and long versions too.

The compact version of the Peugeot Traveller is 4600 mm (181.1024 inch) long. The standard version is 4950 mm (194.8819 inch) long. The long version is 5300 mm (206.6615 inch). Now, please welcome the saint three top brands in the business world with its business premium models:
·         Audi A6 is 4933 mm (194.2126 inch) long and it is 17 mm (0.6693 inch) shorter than the Peugeot Traveller standard version;
·         Audi A8 standard version is 5135 mm (202.1654 inch) long and it is 165 mm (6.4961 inch) shorter than the Peugeot Traveller long base;
·         BMW 5-series is 4907 mm (193.189 inch) long and it is 43 mm (1.6929 inch) shorter than the standard version of the Peugeot Traveller;
·         BMW 7-series standard version is 5238 mm (206.2205 inch) long which is 62 mm (2.4409 inch) shorter than the long base of the Peugeot Traveller;
·         Mercedes standard S-Class is 5116 mm (201.4173 inch) long and it is 184 mm (7.2441 inch) shorter than the long base of the French MPV Traveller.
·         Mercedes E-Class is 4923 mm (193.8189 inch) which is 27 mm (1.0630 inch) shorter than the standard version of the Peugeot Traveler;
·      I thought about the other MPV which are business-oriented and I remember only the V-Class of Mercedes-Benz. It is 5140 mm (202.3622 inch) long and the German MPV is 160 mm (6.2992 inch) shorter than the French one.
All vehicles in the top segment have long versions but I can’t compare them with the Peugeot Traveller. That’s because the long versions of AUDI A8, BMW 7-Series and MERCEDES S-Class have different purpose in the business world. About the Peugeot Traveller for me it’s a vehicle which can gives more than A6, 5-series and E-Class and has to be the cheapest model and from the V-Class.

Yes, the Peugeot Traveller won’t give you engines like in the German models but it also offers low fuel consumption. There are three diesel engines with 1.6L and two diesel engines with 2.0L displacement. The output power range of the engines is between 95 hp to 180 hp:
·         1.6 L BlueHDi 95 hp, 5-speed manual gearbox from 5.5 l/100 km, i.e. 144 g/km of CO2;
·         1.6 L BlueHDi 95 hp Stop&Start system, ETG6 controlled gearbox from 5.2 l/100 km, i.e. 135 g/km of CO2;
·         1.6 L BlueHDi 115 hp Stop&Start system, 6-speed manual gearbox from 5.1 l/100 km, i.e. 133 g/km of CO2;
·         2.0 L BlueHDi 150 hp Stop&Start system, 6-speed manual gearbox from 5.3 l/100 km, i.e. 139 g/km of CO2;
·         2.0L BlueHDi 180 hp Stop&Start system, EAT6 automatic gearbox from 5.8 l/100 km, i.e. 151 g/km of CO2.
The amounts of CO2 are approximately and some of them have to be approved. Anyway, the engines for Peugeot Traveller used Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in order to cover the EURO6 requirements. The Peugeot Traveller has AdBlue tank with 22.4L volume. The cap of the AdBlue tank is hidden in the middle pillar and it’s invisible when the driver’s door is closed.

For me, the most interesting engine is 2.0L with 180 hp an EAT 6-speed automatic transmission.

I said that the Peugeot Traveller has to give more than the German vehicles in the business segment. Yes, it does. The Traveller offers up to 9 seats and 1500 liters (1384 cubic dm VDA) boot space. If you need more space for transport something, you can increase the trunk space because the second and the third row seats are removable. The compact version also offers 9 seats but the question is does the Traveller Compact will take the luggage of nine people?!

So, if you are a team leader or a businessman who has crew and all of you have to travel to presenting a product or negotiating a business proposal. Do German sedans will be enough for your team and luggage? Does the price of the Peugeot Traveller is better than the Mercedes V-Class? Actually, I’m not sure about the price of the Peugeot Traveller but I think it should be lower than the Mercedes V-Class. If the price of the Traveller is equal or high than the V-Class, it’s clear. Everybody will choose the V-Class, because it’s a Mercedes.

The Peugeot Traveller 6 people configiration
The first point is that the Peugeot Traveller is longer than the Audi, BMW and Mercedes premium sedans. The long version of Traveller is longer from the Mercedes V-Class. The second point is that the French business MPV could take 9 people, which isn’t a plus versus the V-Class but the price of the Peugeot has to be lower than the mentioned competitors.

Let’s think about the prestige. Having a BMW 5-Series or 7-Series it will be normal the door to be opened for you. Let’s add this prestige element to the Peugeot Traveller. The French MPV has electronically open/close sliding doors for both sides. If you are going to enter the Traveller it’s necessary to put your feet under the slide door and it will be open for you automatically. This saving time because, when you arriving at the spot the driver should get out of the car and to walk to opposite side of the car to open the door for you. Probably, it could take about 15 seconds. After your meeting finished, you should inform the driver that you are going to return in the office or to go home. Then the driver has to get out of the car again to walk to opposite side of the car to open the door for you. You will enter the car and will wait about 15 seconds the driver to take his/her position in the car. During the walk for open and close the door for you, the driver could hurt as slipping or to hobble on the curbstone. All of these daily circumstances could make you late. The Peugeot Traveller’s back sliding doors are electronically open and close for you so, the driver’s misfortunes could be avoided and you will safe time. Moreover, there aren’t automatic doors in other models except in the Rolls-Royse and in the buses. The electronically doors of the Peugeot Traveller comes as standard and the hands free opening is available on deluxe version, probably as an additional equipment.

The interesting is that the Peugeot Traveller uses the redesign EMP2 platform. The front suspension is Pseudo MacPherson. The Traveller has new oblique wishbone rear suspension which supports a payload if 1400 kg (almost 3087 pounds). The variable stiffness springs and shock absorbers has to guarantee the maximum comfort if the Traveller is loaded or not. The new rear suspension is also compatible with the DANGEL 4X4 transmission. I’m hoping that the Peugeot Traveller will have such version.
