The New BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4: Suspension, Chassis and Brakes

The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 have core development aim to improve the suspension and chassis due to the higher performance of the powertrain and to introduce more dynamic and sharper handling for a typical ALPINA ride comfort.

Both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 used an ALPINA sport suspension, which is with electronically adjustable dampers for balanced chassis characteristics.

Both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 used an ALPINA sport suspension, which is with electronically adjustable dampers for balanced chassis characteristics. During the development the focus is placed on improving the lateral driving dynamics markedly and on providing a wide range differentiation between the different driving models. The ALPINA XD3 and ALPINA XD4 have the Driving Experience Control switch with which the suspension is adjustable in rebound and compression from maximum dynamics in Sport+ Mode to maximum ride comfort in Comfort+ Mode. The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and BMW ALPINA XD4 have sport springs, both stiffer and shorter. The result is a lower center of gravity for a further optimization of handling and aerodynamics.

Due to one degree of negative camber at the front axle gives very neutral handling and excellence lateral grip for both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4. The new models have a variable ratio electromechanical steering rack. The ALPINA adaption ensures precise steering and also requires less steering input at lower speeds, which is very useful for parking.

The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 are fitted as standard with the ALPINA CLASSIC 20” wheels with twenty spokes, lockable hub covers and hidden air valves. The air reaches the tire via a hollow drilled spoke. The BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 are available with optional aluminum ALPINA CLASSIC 22” wheel and tire combination. It reduces unspring masses with 15 kg which is nearly 30% in comparison with to conventional cast aluminum wheels of the same size.

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 comes with different tires for each axle. If the choice is ALPINA CLASSIC 20” the SUVs come with ultra-high performance tires from Pirelli measuring 255/45 ZR20 front wheels and 285/40 ZR20 rear wheels. If the choice is the optional ALPINA CLASSIC 22”, the tire set-up is with a new development by Pirelli with size 255/35 ZR22 front and 295/30 ZR22 rear. Both 20” and 22” Pirelli P Zero tires are develop especially for ALPINA’s requirements and bear ALP labeling. The tires combine motorsport technology with a flat shoulder contour and an innovative tread pattern facilitates high lateral loads and precise steering feeling without compromising wet handling.

The brake system of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and the BMW ALPINA XD4 uses four piston fixed caliper with 395 mm discs at the front and floating caliper with 370 mm discs at the rear. Optionally, you can choice a high-performance brake system which combines lightweight drilled composite discs measuring 395 mm at the front and 398 mm at the rear with sport-spec brake pads for even more fading resistance under very high loads. The sport-spec brake pads and drilled brakes discs can lead to increased brake noise or brake vibration which won’t be big deal if you want to use exactly this brake set-up.
